Abbey Caves - Whangarei, New Zealand

This seams like an easy one to add to the itinerary.  The location of the caves are just outside of Whangarei and

We just need to bring out headlamps, hiking boots and off we go exploring the Abbey Caves.

I read that we will see lots and lots of glow worms, stalactites and stalagmites.  Sounds great.  How much?  Free you say.  Even better!

Access to the caves is free but make sure you bring a torch/flashlight and proper footwear.  I have done a little spelunking and gloves can be handy too.  Do not enter the caves after a rainfall or while it is raining, water levels can rise and possibly trap you.  Guide yourself to the caves' location with this map, it isn't exact, so ask some locals or keep an eye out for signs.

There is a warning about car theft in the area.  So make sure valuables are safely locked away in the boot and you have nothing visible that thieves would be lured to.

Here's a great link to a blog with great photos of the Abbey Caves
