Canterbury New Zealand struggle with earthquake aftermath

I have been watching live Sky News of the latest Canterbury earthquake and I can't imagine what Cantabrians are going through.  There is so much devastation and the central business district/downtown is almost left to ruin.  Likely hundreds of buildings will have to be demolished, including iconic heritage buildings.

There are ongoing searches for survivours amoung the rubble of fallen buildings as well as removing bodies of those whom lost their lives from this latest natural disaster.  So far the number of dead is now reported as 38 but there was a NPR release suggesting more than 200 is likely.

The videos are awfully sobering and eery  to watch, thinking of the bodies that were trapped or crushed by the falling buildings.  2 city buses were crushed by buildings falling on them, the buses had passengers onboard and I believe all these had lost their lives.

It has been recently difficult for the Kiwis on the South Island with the last September earthquake and the Pike River Mine disaster.  I do hope the rescue efforts and support from other nations bring more happy news of survivors.
